ping glide 4.0 wedge

Tour winner Michael Thompson uses Ping's Glide 4.0 wedges.

Jonathan Wall/GOLF

The numbers listed below from a 56-degree wedge test with Golf Laboratories’ swing robot will most benefit golfers on the slower end of the swing speed spectrum who struggle to generate enough spin on the course. Too little spin makes it difficult to hold the green — a problem older golfers tend to deal with.

The good news is a wedge can help you gain some additional zip, and then some.

At 80 mph (the robot’s speed for this test), we saw a couple of wedges top 11,000 RPMs during testing. That should be music to the ears of spin-deficient golfers.

COMPACT SHAPE The Glide 4.0 setup appeals to the eye with its rounded, compact design that benefits from advancements to the lead edge and hosel transition. MILLED GROOVES & FACE BLAST In combination with the precision-milled face and grooves, the new Emery face blast adds more texture to the hitting surface, creating higher friction and more interaction between the club and ball for more spin and lower launch. FULL SHOTS: Lower-lofted wedges (50° and 52°) feature a 20° sidewall milled to maximize groove volume. Cleveland Golf CBX Full-Face 2 Custom Wedge

$169.99
Featuring the largest clubface ever in a CBX Wedge, plus HydraZip, ZipCore and UltiZip technologies, CBX Full-Face 2 lets you strike it anywhere with complete con dence from any greenside position or condition. HydraZip A new, dynamic face blast and laser-milled line pattern, HydraZip maximizes friction for improved spin consistency in wet or dry conditions. Visually, CBX Full-Face 2 Wedge faces are much more matte than past Tour Satin offerings, noticeably reducing glare at address. ZipCore Set in the heart of the Wedge, ZipCore is a new addition for CBX Full-Face 2. Our proprietary, lightweight and low-density core technology, ZipCore reduces vibrations while also perfecting the CG and boosting MOI for increased feel, control, consistency and forgiveness over last generation. UltiZip UltiZip’s full-face network of sharp, deep, and tightly spaced grooves maximizes performance at contact. By slicing through and channeling debris to bite harder, UltiZip offers purer spin, more control, and more consistency. 5. Mizuno S23 (10,710 RPMs)

Mizuno S23 Custom Wedge

$159.99
ENGINEERED FOR SPIN ONE-PIECE GRAIN FLOW FORGED / CENTRAL SWEET SPOT Comprehensively engineered for extreme backspin – the S23 combines the precision and playing profile of a player’s bladed wedge with the aggressive performance of a toe-weighted design. A shorter hosel and heel-orientated cavity allow greater mass pushed towards the toe and a centered sweet spot (located heel-side in conventional wedges) . The centered sweet spot contributes to longer impact time, less head deflection and higher spin from both full and partial shots. Delivered with the unmistakable feel of a Mizuno one-piece Grain Flow Forging.“That check and spin you see from the pros isn’t purely because of newer grooves – most of us don’t have the consistency of strike to get that kind of action. For the vast majority, a centralized sweet spot is much easier to find and get that repetitive action.” David Llewellyn FORGED IN HIROSHIMA JAPAN One-piece Grain Flow Forged HD at Mizuno’s iconic facility in Hiroshima Japan – where Mizuno irons have been produced since 1968. SPIN CENTRAL Weight pushed to the toe delivers a more centred sweet spot, more consistent strike and reliable high-spin numbers. TOUR-READY DESIGN The S23’s partial heel-cavity and short hosel, centralizes the sweet spot, whilst maintaining a players preferred versatile look at address. LOFT SPECIFIC PROFILE Stronger lofts feature a tear-drop straight edge. Flowing gently into a more rounded lob wedge – with grinds to suit. WET WEATHER PERFORMANCE Mizuno’s HydroFlow Micro Grooves are laser etched to release moisture and reduce spin drop off.
