Day 2 at the 2024 Masters is complete, and the wind continued to wreak havoc on the field. Max Homa, Bryson DeChambeau and Scottie Scheffler share the 36-hole lead at six under par while a number of pre-tournament favorites missed the cut. Who — or what — has been the biggest disappointment thus far?

Zephyr Melton, assistant editor (@zephyrmelton): I was mightily disappointed in Rory’s fight today. He entered Round 2 one under and with a round near even par, he would’ve been right in the thick of it heading into the weekend. Instead, he had another lackluster round at Augusta National with three bogeys, a double and no birdies. His 77 was good enough to make the cut, but barring something historic this weekend, his quest for the career grand slam will drag on another year.

Jack Hirsh, assistant editor (@JR_HIRSHey): Justin Thomas’ last four holes. J.T. has had a mixed bag of sorts this season after his objectively terrible 2023 season and it seemed like he was finally going to head into the week at a major with a chance to win again. He was even par on 15 when he tried to lay up around the trees that neck the left side of fairway. He overcooked it and it ended up in the water. He made double and played the last four holes in seven over par to miss the cut by one. It’s the second straight Masters he missed the cut with debacle to finish his second round and it’s the fourth time in the last five majors he’s missed the weekend. Clearly the issue wasn’t “Bones” Mackay.

Claire Rogers, senior social media manager (@kclairerogers): Big names who missed the cut! As happy as I am that Tiger made the cut (and some history while he was at it) today, I’m really bummed that we won’t get to watch Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas or Jordan Spieth tee it up this weekend. I can’t think of the Masters without thinking about how fun it’s been to watch Jordan Spieth do Jordan Spieth things out here at Augusta National, so I’ll definitely be missing him this weekend.

Josh Berhow, managing editor (@Josh_Berhow): First, let me say this has been a wonderful Masters thus far. A strong leaderboard, some crazy wind, a good amount of bizarreness and what should be a perfect weekend of weather to decide a champion. As for the biggest disappointment, that’s Wyndham Clark. Sure, it was his first time here, but it wouldn’t have been surprising to see him contend.

Jessica Marksbury, senior editor (@Jess_Marksbury): Agree, Josh! This weekend is set to be epic indeed. That said, I guess I’ll pick on Viktor Hovland. I know he’s cooled a bit since the top form he exhibited in the fall, but after sort of getting in the mix with an opening round 71, I certainly expected more than an 81 to follow that, and a bummer of a MC.
